E-Research Endeavours Workshop: Collaboration

From ESIWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Here's a list of discussion points for the session on encouraging and managing collaboration. Please feel free to add to this list:

  • Do we sufficiently understand collaboration in its various forms...
  • ...and how it might be supported through technologies?
  • Why do we want to foster 'collaboration' in the first place, what is its value?
  • What specific forms of collaboration do we find in (academic) research?
  • Collaboration also involves dealing with (potential) conflicts
  • What incentives exist that further collaboration...
  • and what disincentives prevent it?
  • What role do funders have to play in shaping the conditions under which collaboration takes place? Do they need to develop, e.g., standard policies for data curation (as mentioned in the SUPER report)?
  • What role does the notion of a 'virtual organisation' play? VOs are clearly more than a mechanism for managing authentication and authorisation but does the scope include collaboration support in all its forms? Or should we see VOs as an enabling concept?
  • How can we define policies that work well in the context of loose collaborations as opposed to formal projects with top-down lines of control?
  • How is success in collaboration defined?
  • How are risks in doing collaboration identified? How can such risks be mitigated?
  • Are there different kinds of collaboration that may need different kinds of support?
