Read the original Theme proposal for the full story, but, in brief, the goal of the Theme is to help prepare the community for the coming generation of sky surveys. The Theme will be structured in three strands

  • Scientific Prioritisation
  • Data Management
  • Data Analysis

each of which will have its own leader and its own planned deliverables. Each strand will run some activities independently, but joint workshops will ensure that the overlap between the three is properly considered.

There will be several kinds of events:

  • General community events. We intend having a general event to launch the theme and another to present its draft deliverables to the community. These will be held at eSI and be open to all interested parties.
  • Focussed workshops. These will address specific topics selected for detailed study at the launch event. Most of these will be held at eSI, but some may be held elsewhere. Depending on their nature, these may be open to all, or by invitation only.
  • Study visits. Some topics may be better addressed by study visits than by workshops. Such visits may entail theme leaders (or other members of a possible core group) visiting domain experts in their home institutions, or bringing several people to Edinburgh for a few days.
  • Theme-associated events. It may be desirable to associate events (e.g. talks at the UK National Astronomy Meeting) with the theme, without requiring support for them.
