NGSS Workshop Planning

From ESIWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The planning discussions at the NGSS Kick-Off Meeting resulted in the following sets of topics for future NGSS workshops:

1. Requirements for multi-wavelength science

e.g.

  • cross-matching (including standards for recording them, and methods for implementing them)
  • survey footprints

2. Simulations

e.g.

  • Requirements
  • Astrophysical input
  • Dynamic range required
  • Ensembles for uncertainties on parameters
  • Interaction with HPC community

3. Time-varying phenomena

  • Identification and classification algorithms:
    • Scalability
    • New and old classes of transient
    • Manual intervention and visualization
  • Coordination of follow-up

(N.B. this is the topic for the second NGSS workshop http://www.nesc.ac.uk/esi/events/1052/ The Transient Sky).

4. Joint workshop with GREAT10on weak lensing shape measurement

5. Photometric redshifts

6. Archive support services

  • spatial coverage
  • user-specified views
  • summary statistics
  • MyDB
  • syntax checking of queries

7. Data management

e.g.

  • distributed data management
  • RDBMS v SciDB v Google-like approaches
  • GrayWulf-like systems
  • range of usages: balance between server-side and client-side functionality

8. Large-scale spectroscopic surveys

(Both Galactic and extragalactic)

  • computational needs

9. Machine learning and sky surveys

e.g.

  • feature selection: e.g. best for transient classification
  • deblending
  • inage data compression
  • weak lensing
  • photometric redshifts
