Next-Generation Sky Surveys

This workshop is being held in conjunction with the on-going e-Science Institute Theme on 'Next Generation Sky Surveys': see http://www.nesc.ac.uk/esi/themes/theme_11/ for more details.

Survey astronomy is data-intensive research par excellence, exhibiting the characteristics of scale and complexity that provide the focus to this workshop. The current generation of sky survey datasets and 10s-100s of TB in size, while, in the next generation, surveys such as that to be undertaken by the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) will be ~100PB.

The survey astronomy community is, therefore, at a critical point in its history, preparing for sky surveys whose data management and data analysis requirements dwarf what is currently possible, and so astronomers need the help of the computer science community (broadly defined) to realise in practice the great scientific advances that these new datasets make possible in principle.

Involvement with this workshop will provide invaluable pointers to developing techniques and technologies that can be employed in solving the problems posed by the next generation sky surveys, as well as making connections with the practitioners who can deliver those solutions.
